Election Year Food Bill

Must read Mark Bittman piece, despite the part where he blames Herman Cain-the (alleged) Republican poster boy for sexual harassment in the work place-for the fact that wages have been stagnant for a portion of the food service industry.

Bill Clinton is the one that cut the deal, but it’s an election year so never mind that.  Dems are supposed to blame Herman Cain for the fact that Americans by and large are interested in eating huge portions of cheap food.  Is Herman Cain also to blame for a lack of immigration policy that has allowed a flood of cheap labor to pick tomatoes and cook at chain restaurants and keep food as cheap as possible?

Rumor has it that Herman Cain has been going around and swatting vegetables out of the mouths of unsuspecting Americans, and that’s why they only eat less than 5% of their recommended daily allowance in fruits and vegetables.  Stop Herman Cain!!!

The Farm bill debate is bullshit, the usual sides face off to make an almost entirely meaningless attempt at “change”, because what they really want is you to vote for them, not much else.  According to TakePart.com 78% of Americans want to see this change, further evidence that polls lie.

How long is the wait at the Cheesecake Factory tonight?  That is what folks want to eat, and that is what they will vote for.

Don’t blame Democrats or Republicans, it’s a democracy and folks are getting what they want, no two ways about it.  Wanna make a difference?  Than boycott Adam Richman’s morally offensive celebration of gluttony on the Travel Channel.  Boycott their advertisers.  Every chance you get ask people with integrity like, Andrew Zimmern, why they are on the same channel, why they don’t make higher level changes, and what they are doing with their moral authority-do.  Talk about obesity with your friends and neighbors, and make a change in our own life.

In the mean time food workers compete for wages that will remain stagnant because the general pop decides that cheap is best, and that’s what they are getting across the board, and in the process we are all cheaper because of it.

What’s interesting is that rabid conservatives and rabid liberals are uniting on this issue.

My dining experiences at The Cheesecake Factory were what changed my mind about what constitutes good food. I hated being treated the way they treat customers. I hated the way everything tasted manufactured. I hated paying premium prices for something that was obviously not premium.

I wouldn’t hold Zimmern accountable for being on the same channel. His praise for The Cheesecake Factory, however…
